Harold Matzner Sponsors Dinner in the Canyons
Harold Matzner's impressive list of accomplishments range from being the acting Chairman of the Board for CBA Industries for over 30 years, to being owner of the Palm Springs Tennis Club and the landmark Spencer's Restaurant, to being CEO of a New Jersey-based branding, advertising, and marketing company.
PALM DESERT, Calif., Nov. 5, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Famed philanthropists Harold Matzner and Jim Houston kept it short, sweet and to the point with their speeches at the 2014 Dinner in the Canyons Gala.
Set against the backdrop of a gorgeous sunset in the Andreas Canyon, the fundraiser exceeded the money raised all season for the Agua Caliente Cultural Museum - altogether, more than $300,000. Harold Matzner, the executive vice president of the Palm Springs Art Museum, and one of the honorees, was quoted as saying "I am acutely aware of the importance of preserving art and culture. The Agua Caliente Cultural Museum is an important part of a gigantic partnership between the tribe and the community." The Museum itself caters to more than 28,000 members of the Agua Caliente tribe, providing educational exhibits, book talks, field trips, a number of culturally-based festivals and symposiums.
The gala, being nothing short of spectacular, was fully catered with exquisite dishes consisting of everything from sea bass to beef filet. In addition to a top-notch menu, guests were brought in to the event by top-of-the-line motor coaches, where they received a red-carpet welcome. To top off the evening's events, former Miss Navajo Nation and Grammy nominee Radmilla Cody performed in a number of Native languages.
Asides from raising money from the $300 a plate paid by attendees, $18,000 was raised from the sales of Native American art and jewelry. Says the platinum sponsor Harold Matzner: "The Agua Calientes are one of the most successful tribes in the history of this country, and their success is a significant driver of our local economy." Both Matzner and Houston were close to late tribal leader Richard Milanovich, often meeting with him over lunch. Houston adds, "Sometimes I still go see him to talk about my problems and on the way back to my car, I suddenly start to see things more clearly."
Judging by the money raised and the number of cultural pieces sold, we can safely say that the event was a success. Milanovich would be proud.
