HeadFirst Sports Injury and Concussion Care Center Hosts Renowned Brain Injury Expert

ANNAPOLIS, Md., Sept. 21, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Gerry Gioia, Ph.D., Director of Neuropsychology at Children's National Medical Center and known worldwide for his work on pediatric head injuries, today toured HeadFirst's Annapolis Sports Injury and Concussion Care Center. After collaborative meetings with the HeadFirst team, Dr. Gioia lectured to over 60 pediatricians and family practitioners on the importance of the proper evaluation and management of young athletes sustaining head injuries, and the proper path for a safe return to play.

Dr. Gioia speaks internationally regarding his recommendations for the evaluation and management of acute head trauma, and works with schools, teachers, trainers, coaches and physicians to ensure people are receiving current information necessary for correct head injury management. His lecture 'Concussion Care for Kids: It's a Team Sport,' helps community primary and urgent care physicians learn more about the role they can play in evaluating and managing acute head trauma in sports related injuries.

Maryland law now requires that children who attend public school or play for youth sports or recreational leagues and suffer a head injury during play on a state or county field be removed from practice or the game for a comprehensive evaluation, and be approved by a qualified medical provider before returning to play.
