As July 1 Contract Deadlines Loom, 1199C Members Rally
PHILADELPHIA, June 11, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- As contract talks with Philadelphia Hospitals and nursing homes continue, members of District 1199C of the National Union of Hospital and Health Care Employees - America Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, AFL-CIO plan a district-wide, "ground-zero" rally at 5 p.m. Wednesday (June 13) at the Pennsylvania Convention Center.
Union President Henry Nicholas said, "The union has been working for a year to avoid a confrontation. But we have met stiff opposition from employers. Members are meeting Wednesday and we will take a strike vote."
Leaders of The Philadelphia Council AFL-CIO have unanimously endorsed the upcoming 1199C rally and issued the following statement: "We'll be rallying not only to support their fight for fair contracts, but also to oppose the austerity budgets, anti-union laws, and anti-worker measures being pushed by the right wing in Harrisburg."
District 1199C currently is engaged in contract negotiations with the following employers: Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, Hahnemann University Hospital, Temple University Health Systems, the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, Hahnemann University Hospital/Sodexho, Hahnemann University/Crothall, Chestnut Hill Lodge Health and Rehabilitation Center, St. Monica Manor (Licensed Practical Nurses), Golden Living Center-Stenton, Golden Living Center-Landsdale; and in New Jersey: Voorhees Pediatric Facility, Genesis HealthCare - Cooper River, Genesis HealthCare Burlington Woods, Genesis HealthCare - Kresson View.
Contracts are set to expire July 1.
