Market Overview

Overview
The Brazilian health care is one of the largest and most expensive healthcare market amongst the BRICS nations and at the same time is in much need of improvement. It was estimated that the total healthcare spending in 2013 was approximately $ billion, which was approximately % of Brazil's Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The Brazilian government has developed the "Sistema Único de Saúde" (SUS), or the Unified Health
System. It is one of the largest public healthcare systems in the world. The central purpose of the system is to provide "universal, integrated, and egalitarian" access to high-quality healthcare. It is based on the model of disease prevention and treatment provision, rehabilitation and health promotion, through a decentralized management system. Threequarters of the country's population depend on free healthcare treatment from Brazil's SUS, The remaining population is enrolled in private health plans. Care provided under the SUS is split between public and private providers. Most in-patient services are privately owned and executed whereas most outpatient care is carried out by public facilities.

Healthcare Scenario
Brazil at present is the largest market in Latin America (LATAM) for healthcare technology equipment and modalities, which is estimated to be more than $8 million annually. Brazil is a major producer and exporter of medical equipment but these device are low-end in nature and are not comparable with the high-end devices produced by major OEMs. Brazil has great prospects in becoming globally competent in areas of
healthcare advanced technology and value added products. In 2010, the Word Health Organization (WHO), published a study on the world's largest producers of medical devices. Among the
emerging economies, Brazil was the second largest producer of medical device after China.

Trends
Brazilian families have significantly increased expenditures on healthcare and well being. Information technology enabled solutions are playing a key role in healthcare across LATAM. Brazilian hospitals are expanding and modernizing their existing infrastructures in order to improve their services. This is gradually leading to the significant penetration of IT solutions, such as Hospital Information System (HIS), Electronic Medical
Record) (EMR), Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) especially in private healthcare providers. Technologies such as cloud computing, big data are expected to change the way how healthcare is provided.
