"One of the problems with many prostate cancer treatments," says Dr. Gapin, "is damage to quality of life. While other traditional prostate cancer treatments destroy the cancer, they also damage surrounding tissues that control sexual and urinary health. I am excited about Sonablate HIFU as an option for my patients, because it allows me to deliver prostate cancer treatment with a level of precision I have never before been able to offer. This reduces side effects while maintaining excellent cancer outcomes."
With the Sonablate HIFU, Dr. Gapin is able to treat men with less risk of common prostate cancer treatment side effects such as urinary incontinence and erective dysfunction. Men recover quickly from the procedure and return to their normal activities. "My patients who have undergone HIFU are amazed at how quickly they are able to return to their routine daily life," said Dr. Gapin.
The Sonablate is the first FDA-approved device to receive regulatory authorization for the ablation of prostate tissue using HIFU. While somewhat new to the United States market, Sonablate has been used in international prostate cancer treatment centers in over 30 countries. Over 55,000 patients with prostate cancer have undergone HIFU since it's inception in the mid-1990's. This includes over 4,000 American men who traveled outside the United States to have the procedure performed.
