High Level Libyan Delegation in Washington DC to Consult with U.S. Officials
WASHINGTON, April 16, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Representatives from the internationally recognized democratically elected parliament of Libya are in Washington for a week-long visit for consultations and meetings with U.S. government officials and foreign policy analysts.
The visit comes as U.N. sponsored and U.S. supported talks resume in Morocco in an effort to form a government of national unity.
Discussions are taking place at the White House, State Department, US Treasury, DoD and with senior members of the U.S. Congress focusing on Libya's political situation, domestic security, fighting terrorism, the economy and how the U.S. and the international community can support the democratically elected parliament and people of Libya.
The delegation includes key members of the Libyan Parliament including Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Idris A. ID Almghrby; Defense and National Security Committee Chairman Fathallah H. Abdukarem Mohamed; Economic, Trade and Investment Committee Chairman Ali F. Ibrahim Khaled; Energy and Natural Resources Committee Chairman Issa Mohamed Eisunosl Sullman and Finance and Planning Committee Chairman Omar A.A. Tantush.
About the Libyan Parliament
The democratically elected parliament was established in June 2014 following a free and fair election. Nationalist candidates won the vast majority of seats.
Members of the previous elected body - the General National Council (GNC) - refused to accept that they were no longer in power and joined with militias to oppose the people's choice. The militias and their alliance with former government figures who resisted the democratic process are responsible for the atmosphere of violence and chaos in Libya today, notably in Tripoli which they are occupying by force.
Government of National Unity
In talks this week in Morocco, representatives of the democratically elected parliament will continue to exchange views with other political factions about a process to form a government of national unity and to put an end to the violence by militias and halt the encroaching influence of ISIS. The democratically elected parliament and its executive branch insist that all parties renounce terrorism.
U.S. Libyan Relations
The democratically elected parliament of Libya looks to the United States for support in preserving the democratic process, assistance in stopping the violence and eradicating terrorism as well as help to kick start and stimulate the Libyan economy.
