High Mix-Low Volume Components Demand Boosting Flexible Manufacturing System

RALEIGH, N.C., Nov. 22, 2021 /PRNewswire/ -- The increase in demand for high mix-low volume components (from industries such as medical, aerospace, automotive) requires customization and high flexibility in production, which creates the need for a Flexible Manufacturing System (FMS). The adoption of FMS has created a positive impact on efficiency in production as well as quality. Some of the challenges in FMS adoption are in the planning phase, which is considered the most critical stage in FMS. 

• High capital investments are challenging for Tier II and III suppliers while implementing FMS.
• Manufacturing industries also face infrastructure constraints as FMS requires major alterations in the existing plant layout.
• Major changes have to be made in machine tool arrangements to find space for installing robots. The arrangements for raw materials and tools storage are also important in finalizing the plant layout to reduce loading/unloading process downtime. 
• Industries need to use big data analysis involving huge labor hours to collect and feed past data in computers and require regular updates. 
• Companies would require highly skilled employees for operating machinery/equipment, thereby increasing the cost of salaries. 
• Higher maintenance cost is expected and FMS can be implemented only in stages requiring temporary production shutdowns which could range from two to four months. 
• Major implementation of FMS is batch production of components and also in warehouse management where material handling, storage/retrieval systems, automated inspection, etc. are carried out.

Some of the areas where FMS are preferred include batch production of components or parts, automated material handling, inspection, storage, or retrieval systems. 

Adoption of FMS is increasingly seen in automotive industries, especially in luxury car OEMs, due to the large number of variants produced by companies for a particular brand. Notable trends in FMS implementation are the use of robots and automated guided vehicles in storage or retrieval systems. The use of big data and the Internet of Things (IoT) by companies in distribution for an efficient operation has also supported the growth of FMS. Increased efficiency and zero error were achieved thanks to the use of Big data and IoT in the process of implementing FMS. Forging, machining, metal fabrication, surface treatment, and other processes are becoming automated and interconnected with FMS implementation.
