High school project EasyBib.com grows to 47 million yearly users and over 1 billion citations
NEW YORK, Dec. 4, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- EasyBib.com announced today that over 47 million students have used their service in the past twelve months, and over 1 billion citations have been created to date, making the it one of the most popular educational websites.
EasyBib was started in 2001, when then high school friends Darshan Somashekar and Neal Taparia put their skills learned in computer science class to good use. Frustrated with how time consuming and complicated a bibliography was, they created EasyBib to automate bibliographies and citations. Users simply type in the name of a book or enter a website URL, and EasyBib generates and organizes the citation. It's that simple.
EasyBib has since evolved into a company focused on improving student writing and research skills, with a team of over 50 in offices located in New York City and Berlin. The company has not taken any external investment and remains profitable.
The service is supported on numerous platforms and devices. Its tablet, iPhone, and Android apps, which allows you to scan a book and cite it, has been downloaded over 250,000 times. EasyBib's Google Chrome apps and extensions have been installed 236,689 times, and their Google add on for Google's Word Processor has 624,619 users.
The EasyBib team estimates that at least 1 in every 2 students from middle school to undergrad use the service in the US. As result, all major database publishers like EBSCO, ProQuest, Cengage, and Merriam Webster use EasyBib's API to generate citations on their services and/or export citations to EasyBib.
EasyBib's institutional service is also popular among schools. Over 2000 schools subscribe to EasyBib's premium research and note taking platform, including major school districts like Dallas and Baltimore, as well as colleges like NYU and Emory University.
"We've been fortunate to start a product at an early age that solved our problem, and experiment to see EasyBib grow," said Neal Taparia, Co-CEO. "Now our mission is to leverage our popularity among students and build new tools for both teachers and students that improve writing and critical thinking skills. We believe that's of critical importance to being successful in school and career."
