WASHINGTON, March 7, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- The American Institute of Architects (AIA) 2017 Jury of Fellows has elevated HLW's David Louis Swartz, FAIA, to its prestigious College of Fellows, an honor awarded to members who have made significant contributions to the profession. Founded in 1952, the AIA Fellowship program is one of the highest honors the AIA can bestow upon a member. Election to fellowship not only recognizes the achievements of architects as individuals, but also their significant contribution to architecture and society on a national level. Out of over 90,000 AIA memberships, there are just over 3,000 distinguished with the honor of fellowship and honorary fellowship. The 2017 Fellows will be honored at an investiture ceremony at the 2017 National AIA Convention.
Swartz is a Partner in HLW's Los Angeles and Shanghai offices. He has over 30 years of experience in the design of creative and technologically sophisticated projects and over 21 years at HLW. As a hands-on architect he brings a strong technical background to the HLW team, which is complemented by his ability to seamlessly infuse design and client expectations. During his time at HLW, Swartz has helped to foster an environment where technology, design and management are equals, and where the technical role can flourish, have impact, be rewarded. Swartz has expert code knowledge and is excellent at obtaining city and other constituencies' approvals.
Swartz was involved in an effective campaign to rescind California's attempt to adopt the NFPA as its model building code. He worked with the California Architect's Board and Governor Schwarzenegger's office to adopt the IBC as its model code. Further, Swartz lobbied, litigated and received support from the National AIA, California Architect's Board and Lawton Chiles Governor of Florida to overhaul Florida's Continuing Education system to align with AIA standards setting the tone and survival of Continuing Education nationwide. Swartz has also had a 23 year involvement with the California Supplemental Exam given to all candidates seeking licensure in California. He has been an advocate in focusing the California Architects Board to simplify the examination process to be more achievable, fair and equitable for future architects seeking licensure and architects from other states seeking reciprocal registration.
