DALLAS, Feb. 19, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Industrial and commercial boiler owners and operators recently have raised numerous questions about what steps they must take to be in compliance with the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) newly finalized clean air standards for industrial and commercial boilers. According to the new EPA guidelines, the first critical step is an energy assessment which must be performed by a Qualified Energy Assessor, such as Holman Boiler Works.
"Companies are understandably concerned about meeting the new standards," said Holman Boiler Works President and CEO, John Marrinucci. "As the nation's largest full-service boiler solutions provider, Holman is active in assisting and guiding those companies toward compliance, whether through a full-service assessment, development of recommended actions or through the retrofit of their equipment."
In March 2011 and amended in 2013, the EPA issued a rule imposing stricter emissions limits on industrial and commercial boilers, known as the Boiler MACT (maximum achievable control technology). The final amendments to the rule were published this year on January 31, with the compliance deadline set for January 31, 2016. Up to 14,500 boilers at 1,700 facilities nationwide are subject to the new emission limits, including many at universities, large hospitals, and industrial and municipalities power plants.
As a Qualified Energy Assessor, the Holman team has the ability to evaluate energy saving opportunities available in steam generation and energy use systems. Energy Assessments are required by the EPA and must be performed by a Qualified Energy Assessor.
Typically an Energy Assessment includes:
- Evaluation of the boiler and boiler insulation for thermal leaks
- Checking steam/condensate traps and piping for leaks or failures
- Forced draft and induced draft fan efficiency performance
- Burner combustion testing and analysis
- Identification of cost-effective energy conservation measures.
- A report detailing ways of improving efficiency, including estimated costs and ROI.
"Holman is ready and able to assist boiler users in developing innovative and affordable boiler room solutions to the MACT challenges. We have already been working with customers to provide assessments and recommendations to help them achieve these new clean air standards by the 2016 deadline," said Marrinucci. "So far, we have found most industrial boilers can meet these new standards by conducting periodic maintenance or regular tune-ups without major modifications to their systems.
"We encourage companies to start asking questions now," Marrinucci added. "If there is uncertainty about meeting the new criteria, Holman is qualified to help with that."
