What: |
A dedication of a newly constructed home to house homeless female veterans and their children. HomeAid, VOA and New Town Builders will each have representatives who will speak about the project and its impact on homeless veterans. Councilwoman Jeanne Robb and Denver's Road Home Executive Director Bennie Milliner, a 20-year veteran, will also speak. There will be tours of the property following the dedication. |
When: |
11 a.m. Thursday, December 20, 2012 |
Where: |
1285 Clermont Street, Denver, CO (in Denver's Mayfair neighborhood) |
Why: |
HomeAid Colorado brings together homebuilders and care providers to build homes to serve Colorado's homeless individuals and families. Building materials and labor on each home are donated, allowing care providers to focus on providing much-needed services helping people rebuild their lives. |
The home is the second home HomeAid has built with the VOA and is part of a larger project to build three homes for Colorado's female veterans. The first home was completed in the Spring of 2011. The third home is under construction and is expected to be complete in early 2013. |
|
After the dedication event, Jessie*, age 35, and her daughter Beth*, age 2, will be among the first residents to move into the new home. Jessie came to Volunteers of America Brandon Center in October of 2012, having lost everything after fleeing a domestic violence situation. Jessie is a combat veteran, who served in Operation Iraqi Freedom. Beth is a bright, articulate little girl who loves music and art. Jessie is determined to get her life with her daughter back to 'normal,' and this new home will give her a dignified place to do that. |

Media Note: There will be opportunities to interview and film representatives from HomeAid, VOA and New Town Builders. Members of the media may also tour and film/photograph the home.
