Home Heating Trend: Oil vs. Gas, Who Will Win?

BROOKLYN, N.Y., Nov. 16, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Petri Plumbing & Heating, Inc., an award-winning, family-owned Brooklyn home service staple since 1906, has seen firsthand the development of heating units and recommends that New York homeowners consider the switch from oil to gas for more economical and efficient home heating.

"We've noticed a recent trend in homeowners switching from oil to gas for their heating needs," said Michael Petri, owner of Petri Plumbing & Heating Inc. "It's estimated now that roughly 50 percent of Americans use gas while only eight percent burn oil. A big reason for that is because homes that use oil burning heaters spend on average three times more money on oil than homes using gas burning heaters."

Some of the advantages of natural gas include:

• Natural gas the cleanest burning fossil fuel. The gas burns clear so there is very little residue left behind, no storage tank, and is non-toxic, creating a clean home environment when compared to oil heating methods.
• There is an abundant supply of natural gas. Unlike oil, abundant supplies of natural gas can be found domestically and piped directly into homes. This eliminates the threat of leaks or spills, which can leave devastating effects on the earth.
• Natural gas is safer. When compared to oil, natural gas has an enviable safety record, and manufacturers add an odorant to natural gas so leaks can be easily detected.

"In addition to gas being a cleaner and safer option, oil prices are more volatile than gas because they are determined by global supply and demand," Petri said. "Prices for natural gas are more stable because it is reliant only upon supply and demand needs for the United States and Canada."

Not all gas conversions will end up paying dividends immediately, but Petri recommends that homeowners who are still using oil heating methods check with their local home service company about the potential savings timeline of making the switch.

"To give you an example, I was working with a customer about a year ago who was curious about the differences between oil and gas burning heaters," Petri said. "He was doing his due diligence and had a lot of questions about the differences and how they would affect his home and his wallet. We had a consultation and he ended up making the switch to a gas burning heater. I saw him again recently and he was already saving around 20 to 25 percent. He was so ecstatic, you could just see it on his face."
