How stationery can change the world: Smock launches the first letterpress card against fracking
Sustainable card series aims to educate and bring about action
SYRACUSE, N.Y., June 7, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Smock, (www.smockpaper.com) an eco stationery line based in upstate New York, has launched the first letterpress card focusing on the dangers of hydraulic fracturing. Part of Smock's Change the World series, these earth-friendly cards bring attention to hot-button environmental issues and urge consumers to act. Smock donates 100% of profits from the series to environmental causes that are affecting the planet.
Smock partnered with non-profit Earthworks to create the Fracking card and raise awareness on the dangers of hydraulic fracturing (also known as fracking), an earth-damaging process used for oil drilling. The cards come with an anti-fracking temporary tattoo, and Smock has created a Tumblr blog (gas-and-water-dont-mix.tumblr.com) for customers to upload photos of themselves with their tattoos along with their stories and concerns.
In the U.S., around 2,000 new oil and gas wells are being drilled each month, and 90% of these new wells are fracked. Fracking requires 3-15 million gallons of water and lots of chemicals in order to extract natural gas from the ground. A large percentage of the chemical laced water that is used in this process remains in the earth, soaks into the ground, and threatens the clean water supply. Despite the environmental risks involved, the gas and oil industry is exempt from key federal laws including the Safe Drinking Water Act, the Clean Water Act, the Clean Air Act, and the Superfund Law. Earthworks is working to raise public awareness and advocate reform, while also actively lobbying for changes in the gas & oil industry.
The original card in the Change the World series, Sunflower, focuses on the plight of honeybees and colony collapse disorder. Sunflower is one of Smock's strongest sellers for 2012: the card includes bee-friendly organic sunflower seeds for customers to plant, and benefits the Pesticide Action Network of North America.
