Howell and Christmas law firm announce Fall Session Visionary Scholarship winner, Seantyel Hardy

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C., Sept. 2, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Understanding the sometimes insurmountable debt students face when planning their attendance to law school, last year, the law firm of Howell and Christmas announced a twice yearly, $1,000 Visionary Scholarship help alleviate some of the financial burden. Gary Christmas, founding firm partner, says the scholarship is "…in line with our overall mission…"

The 500 – 1,000 word essay-based scholarship opportunity asks prospective recipients to write about one of three topics; the right of American's to trial by jury, the impact of the United States Constitution on our everyday lives, and whether or not the United States should continue to carry out capital punishment as a penalty for crimes.

This month, first year Cornell University Law student, Seantyel Hardy, submitted an essay detailing her views on how the United States Constitution impacts the everyday lives of Americans.

Hardy, a University of Florida journalism graduate, says in her essay that "…many Americans do not know their Constitutional rights…" but, "…a basic understanding can easily show that it impacts Americans in every way and grants us freedoms that life would look vastly different without."

In her submission, Hardy discussed the expectation in a Georgia restaurant that servers have washed their hands because of mandates present in the sections of the Georgia Health Department code and how those codes tie back to the Necessary and Proper Clause as well as the Commerce Clause of the United States Constitution. Her example presents a relatable illustration of the how the most simple, and sometimes ignored, measures are deeply interwoven into the fabric of the Constitution and, indeed, impact us even when we are unaware.

When asked why the firm created this scholarship, Gary Christmas replied, "It is important for us to give back to our community. This is just one way in which we feel we can create a positive and impactful community ripple effect."

For her part, Hardy looks forward to graduating law school carrying as little debt as possible. This scholarship, she says, will put her a step closer to that goal.

The Howell and Christmas Visionary Scholarship is open to United States citizens and permanent residents who are currently enrolled in an accredited college or university. Applicants must have a GPA of 2.8 or higher and apply the award to their current term's tuition.
