Hurricane Harvey Victims Receive Unlimited Calling from Q Link Wireless
FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla., Aug. 30, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Q Link Wireless is coming to the aid of its Texas customers affected by Hurricane Harvey by extending their cell phone plans to include free unlimited calling.
Lifeline customers in disaster areas who receive service from Q Link Wireless will have unlimited free minutes from August 28, 2017 to September 30, 2017 to help during recovery efforts. The decision was made by Q Link Wireless CEO Issa Asad over the weekend.
"The Lifeline Assistance Program helps millions of people every day stay connected to essential services. But the value of this program is never clearer than during a national disaster," states Issa Asad. "We have people out there whose lives are in danger from flooding, tornados, being sick and trapped in their homes. Because of Lifeline, they can call 911 for help or contact the coast guard if they need rescuing."
These free minutes will give customers the ability to reach emergency services during the widespread flooding that has devastated Houston & surrounding areas in the wake of Hurricane Harvey.
Q Link Wireless provides free phone service to over 200,000 customers living in Texas through the federal Lifeline Assistance Program.
Based in South Florida, Q Link is no stranger to devastating storms. "After a catastrophe like hurricane Harvey, communities need to come together more than ever. Our customers are our community, and we just want to give them something back," says Issa Asad.
The Lifeline Assistance Program was originally created in 1980s during the Reagan administration to provide landline phone service to qualified people across America who were unable afford a phone line. During Hurricane Katrina, those landline phones were of little use for tens of thousands of displaced families. Shortly after, the Bush administration updated the Lifeline program to include coverage for cell phone services.
Now, recipients of this federal benefit are able to leave unsafe, flooded homes, and still have access to the phone service they need to call emergency rescue services or make arrangements for evacuations.
"Since this program was expanded to include cell phones, our customers can call their families to let them know they're okay. They can reach their neighbors to get help or to offer help. They have the phone service they need to get back on their feet," says Issa Asad.
Government programs like Lifeline Assistance keep low-income families and individuals connected to their communities for jobs, school, doctors, emergency services and much more.
