Hyperdynamics Supported, 'American Friends of Guinea' Reports Success for 2010 Programs
Financial resource base grows, supporting expansion plans
HOUSTON, Oct. 28 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- American Friends of Guinea ("AFG"), a tax exempt non-profit targeting medical relief and disease prevention in the Republic of Guinea, West Africa, reported its project(s)' success in 2010. Mrs. Diaraye Sylla Kourouma, AFG's President (aka "Bebe"), reported that the continued funding and staunch support from its key donors, such as Hyperdynamics Corporation (Amex: HDY), has provided the resources for AFG to accomplish the following 2010 projects:
In March a water well project was completed in the Jean Paul II Hospital in the city of Ratoma. This well now provides clean potable water for them. Participating in a ceremony at the conclusion of the project were the hospital management, the minister of Social Services, and the General Secretary of Health for Guinea. The event was televised and broadcast nationwide on RGTV. The next phase of the project will be to provide the plumbing system necessary to bring the clean water into the hospital. This will provide the necessary foundation of required hygiene for the hospital to be able to prevent the spread of disease within its facilities.
Working with the New York based EngenderHealth ("EH"), AFG has gifted numerous surgical kits to women undergoing obstetrical fistula repair. These kits were able to help EH to substantially increase, possibly tripling, the number of afflicted women receiving the procedure. In many cases, AFG delivered the kits directly to the women in need. It was reported that EH performs these surgical repair procedures every other month throughout Guinea.
AFG now plans to start a new project in Guinea to support medical students from the University Gamal Abdel Nazer in Conakry by sponsoring their 2010 curriculum required health fair. This year the students are taking the health fair to the city of Dalaba, about 200 miles from Conakry, the capital. The students will give disease prevention health seminars. They will also perform health assessments and plan to refer any seriously ill people to hospitals for proper care. The seminar topics will cover hypertension, diabetes, sexually transmitted diseases, and treatments for many minor ailments. AFG is providing the students with many supplies including blood pressure cuffs, glucometers, thermometers, condoms, bandages, first aid kits, and hundreds of mosquito nets.
Last but surely not least, Bebe was introduced to hydrocephalus stricken children and their parents. Based on her report, AFG is now preparing to attack this debilitating and deadly affliction of babies and small children in Guinea. More details will be announced about this new project.
When asked to comment, Kent Watts, Chairman for AFG, stated, "On behalf of AFG, I thank Bebe for her selfless sacrifice and clear perspective for the real needs of hurting people in Guinea, and also Mr. Ray Leonard, the Chief Executive for Hyperdynamics, for all his personal help and continued support."
He went on to say, "Life changing impact for people in Guinea continues as originally envisioned. It is a blessing that we have been able to do much with relatively little resources to this point. From the beginning the financial core to fund AFG's mission was tied to the success of Hyperdynamics. The level of commitment from donors of Hyperdynamics' common stock established that fact in October 2009 with commitments for donations of two million shares and a million warrants. Thus, as our financial base continues to grow in value, so will the expansion of our programs. In September the independent resource evaluation by the international petroleum engineering firm, Netherland Sewell, confirmed the long standing belief for offshore Guinea to have world class oil potential, in the billions of barrels. This makes it exciting for us to watch the progress of Hyperdynamics' 3-D seismic program and the development of drilling plans for next year. AFG plan's contemplate that a commercial discovery of oil offshore Guinea would make our financial base sky-rocket in value giving us the ability to fund many new projects." He concluded by saying, "As of now, we are thankful to have far more resources than ever before. We expect to report more about our new efforts in future releases."
