IMC, Inc. Helps Executive Agencies Comply With Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) Order by Analyzing and Deploying Department-Wide Records Management Systems
RESTON, Va., Feb. 23, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- On November 4, 2010, President Barack Obama signed Executive Order 13556, which establishes an open and uniform program for managing information that requires safeguarding or dissemination controls.
According to the Executive Order, "Executive departments and agencies employ ad hoc, agency-specific policies, procedures, and markings to safeguard and control this information, such as information that involves privacy, security, proprietary business interests, and law enforcement investigations. This inefficient, confusing patchwork has resulted in inconsistent marking and safeguarding of documents, led to unclear or unnecessarily restrictive dissemination policies, and created impediments to authorized information sharing." To address these problems, EA 13556 establishes a program for managing this information described as Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) and emphasizes the openness and uniformity of government-wide practice.
Agencies will be required to establish their current CUI categories and sub-categories and submit them for review to the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) within 180 days. NARA will compile a standard catalog of CUI categories and work with each Executive Department to develop a compliance plan.
IMC, Inc. has a number of technologies to assist Executive Departments in compliance with this directive. IMC's Electronic Records Inventory Management (eRIM™) system utilizes highly intelligent automated classification technologies that can enable agencies to establish their CUI categories and sub-categories in the early phases of the process.
"This Executive Order on CUI will impel agencies toward more reliable classifications," states Suresh V. Shenoy, Executive Vice President, IMC. "The new directive creates additional consistency, dissemination and access of information between agencies and the public. IMC has assisted a number of public agencies and private organizations to streamline their record keeping and enable faster and more transparent use of information needed across the board."
As agencies move into the compliance phase they will have to quickly categorize their documents and records and apply the approved CUI classifications. IMC can help agencies implement automated technologies to categorize and classify these documents. Once categorized, records are placed into an enterprise-class records management system which is certified compliant with NARA-endorsed DOD 5015.2 STD. This system will securely manage the records, allow for their rapid retrieval, provide for the required periodic classification review, and manage their final disposition.
By bringing together these world-class applications and leading experts in classification and records management, IMC is well-positioned to offer Executive Department Agencies the ability to quickly meet and exceed the requirements under this Executive Order and comply with NARA-endorsed standards for records management.
