Immersive Code School Helps DC Residents Launch Careers in Web Development
WASHINGTON, May 12, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Katie Walsh is a language fanatic. Aside from her previous job teaching English as a foreign language, she has personally studied French, Chinese and Persian. As she began to look for a new career, though, she encountered a different type of language she wasn't expecting: code.
When Walsh began exploring new career pathways, she knew she wanted her job to be related to language and encourage her to be a lifelong learner. When she discovered the world of software development, those two dreams came together in full force. That's where The Iron Yard entered the picture. Like any language expert, Walsh made sure to do her research:
Once I decided to attend a code school, I began researching options across America. I knew that I could only learn so much in three months, so I wanted to focus on the fundamentals. The Iron Yard emphasized the process of development – how to approach problems, how to find the right resources, and how to coordinate with other developers on a team.
The Iron Yard is an immersive code school that teaches people the skills they need to land a job in tech. Based in the Southeast, they have campuses across the country. Washington, D.C. courses began in January and enrollment is open for their second semester on May 18th (apply here).
Graduates who complete the program receive far more than just skills. Along with a robust career support program, The Iron Yard's D.C. campus has built an impressive advisory board including companies like Optoro, Jibe, SocialTables and Wedding Wire.
Walsh is excited about her future. She learned an open-source language called Ruby on Rails, and is building skills toward a career in digital journalism.
I'm interested in digital journalism because there is so much innovation happening with news media. There are many new platforms and products that are changing the way news is being produced, packaged and consumed, and I would love to work on one of them.
And more languages are in the future for Katie. Currently, she is working as a teaching assistant for the May Ruby on Rails Cohort while learning Objective-C and Swift.
