Until early 2010, the touch panel market was open for many mid-size companies in Taiwan, Korea, Japan, and China. Most producers were producing small quantities of touch panels in various designs depending on customers' demand.
However, the market entered major growth in early 2010, including not only color filter producers but also large-scale panel makers that joined the touch panel business because the panel producers needed a momentum for growth.
The main reason was the flat panel display producers needed a new growth momentum due to negative growth in the LCD display market while the demand for over 10-inch products, such as notebook PCs, AIO PCs, and monitors with touch panels increased rapidly. Thus, the touch panel standardization also progressed. With the standardization of touch panels, the component producers like color filter lines or In-Cell production facilities are nurturing the touch panel business, which can raise significant profits by satisfying customers' needs for a few designs in mass quantity.
The flat panel display industry expects that more film type touch panel sensors will be integrated in flat panels because in 2014 the cost will be less than for glass type touch sensor panels. However, the biggest market for touch panel sensor has been the smartphone segment and now the smartphone market is at its maturity, so Samsung Electronics and Apple are expected to focus on the tablet market with product differentiation. Based on tablet product positioning, the touch panel types-On-Cell, In-Cell and GFF-will apply to the tablet PCs.
