
Industrial Directory Reports Connecticut Manufacturing Jobs Remained Steady Over Year
EVANSTON, Ill., July 18, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Industrial employment in Connecticut remained steady over the past twelve months according to the 2012 Connecticut Manufacturers Register®, an industrial directory published annually by Manufacturers' News, Inc. (MNI) Evanston, IL. MNI reports Connecticut lost just 585 industrial jobs and 44 manufacturers between May 2010 and May 2011, much smaller than the 7,800 manufacturing jobs MNI reported were lost over the 2009-2010 survey period.
Manufacturers' News reports Connecticut is now home to 5,578 manufacturers employing 212,835 workers.
"The recovery is gaining momentum in Connecticut and across the U.S.," says Tom Dubin, President of the Evanston, IL-based publishing company, which has been surveying industry since 1912. "The state boasts an educated workforce and its investments in innovative technologies continue to pay off."
Companies seeing expansions included Cascades Inc., which plans to expand its box plant in Thompson; BoldWood Interiors' new facility in New Haven; and Inline Plastics Corp., which improved and expanded its Shelton location, resulting in 18 new jobs.
Transportation equipment remains Connecticut's largest industrial sector by employment, accounting for 38,030 of the state's jobs, virtually unchanged from a year ago. Industrial machinery and equipment ranks second with 27,167 industrial jobs, with no significant change reported. Fabricated metals ranks as the state's third largest manufacturing sector with 27,015 jobs, down 1.6% over the past twelve months.
MNI reports industrial sectors that gained jobs over the past year included food products, up 7.3%; furniture/fixtures, up 6.9%; rubber/plastics, up 6.5%; chemicals, up 2.5% and electronics, up 1%. Losses were seen in paper products, down 5.2%; textiles/apparel, down 3.3%; stone/clay/glass, down 3.1%; printing/publishing, down 2.3%; lumber/wood, down 2.2% and primary metals, down 1.8%.
Companies closing down included a Beiersdorf Inc. location in Norwalk and Stanadyne Corp.'s plant in Windsor.
The industrial directory reports that Stratford remains the state's top city by industrial employment, accounting for 10,880 manufacturing jobs, up a half percent over the year. Norwalk accounts for 7,949 industrial jobs, down 1.5% over the past twelve months. Third-ranked Groton is home to 7,818, with no significant change reported, while Danbury accounts for 7,236 industrial jobs, down a half percent over the year. Fifth-ranked Bristol accounts for 7,105 industrial jobs, down 3.2% over the past twelve months.
