Industrial Directory Reports Missouri Gained Manufacturing Jobs Over The Past Year
EVANSTON, Ill., Sept. 24, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Manufacturing employment in Missouri increased slightly over the past twelve months according to the 2013 Missouri Manufacturers Register®, an industrial directory published annually by Manufacturers' News, Inc. (MNI) Evanston, IL. MNI reports Missouri gained 788 industrial jobs, or less than one percent between August 2011 and August 2012.
Manufacturers' News reports Missouri is now home to 8,137 manufacturers employing 364,988 workers.
"Missouri continues to see its manufacturing sector improve," says Tom Dubin, President of the Evanston, IL-based publishing company, which has been surveying industry since 1912. "The state's solid infrastructure, educated workforce and friendly business environment has been a draw for a variety of enterprises."
Several manufacturers operating in Missouri reported expansions over the year, including GM's assembly plant in Wentzville; Henniges Automotive's New Haven factory; Butterball's turkey plant in Carthage; 3M's photovoltaic film facility in Columbia; Tyson's poultry plant in Sedalia; Alpla Inc.'s plastic bottle factory in Jefferson City; Anheuser-Busch's aluminum can plant in Arnold; and John Deere's factory in Strafford.
MNI reports Missouri's three largest industrial sectors by employment all reported gains over the past year, with food products manufacturing topping the list at 52,332 industrial jobs, up 1% over the past twelve months. Second-ranked transportation equipment accounts for 42,814 jobs, up 3.2% over the year. Industrial machinery and equipment comes in third with 42,530 jobs, up 1% over the past twelve months.
Other industrial sectors in Missouri that gained jobs over the past year included leather products, up 22%; rubber/plastics, up 7.8%; electronics, up 2.3%; and chemicals, up 1%. Losses were seen in textiles/apparel, down 4.6%; lumber/wood, down 2.5%; paper products, down 2.3%; stone/clay/glass, down 2.7%; furniture/fixtures, down 2% and printing/publishing, down 1.6%.
Industrial locations announcing closures included Winntech Digital Systems' location in Kansas City; Modine Manufacturing's plant in Camdenton; Fortis Plastics' factory in Poplar Bluff; ShoreMaster's plant in Camdenton; Fuqua Building Systems' location in Boonville; and CertainTeed's Joplin facility.
Manufacturers' News reports Southeast Missouri accounts for the most industrial employment in the state with 177,168 jobs, up 1.1% over the year. Northwest Missouri accounts for 92,030 manufacturing jobs, down a half percent, while Southwest Missouri accounts for 70,158 jobs, with no change reported. The Northeast region of the state is home to 25,632 industrial workers, down 2.1% over the past twelve months.
MNI's city data shows St. Louis remains the state's top city by industrial employment with 80,929 jobs, up a half percent over the past twelve months. Second-ranked Kansas City accounts for 40,418, with no significant change reported. Springfield is currently home to 16,678 jobs, down a half percent, while manufacturing employment in fourth-ranked St. Joseph decreased 1.1%, with the city currently accounting for 9,845 jobs. Fifth-ranked Joplin accounts for 8,220 jobs, up 1.8% over the year.
