Industrial Directory Reports South Dakota Manufacturing Jobs Increased 1.8%
EVANSTON, Ill., Jan. 23, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Industrial employment in South Dakota increased 1.8% over the past twelve months according to the 2012 South Dakota Manufacturers Register, an industrial directory published annually by Manufacturers' News, Inc. (MNI) Evanston, IL. MNI reports South Dakota gained 882 industrial jobs between November 2010 and November 2011.
Manufacturers' News reports South Dakota is now home to 1,359 manufacturers employing 47,560 workers.
"The recovery is gaining momentum in South Dakota and across the U.S.," says Tom Dubin, President of the Evanston, IL-based publishing company, which has been surveying industry since 1912. "The state's business friendliness and low taxes have been a draw for a variety of enterprises."
Bright spots for the state included the openings of three new plants in Canton: Legacy Electronics; Adams Thermal Fabrication; and Terex Bid-Well's concrete paving machine plant. In addition, Integra Plastics expanded in Brandon, and Northern Beef Packers plan a meatpacking plant in Aberdeen.
MNI reports food products manufacturing saw a 2.2% employment increase, and currently ranks as the state's largest industrial sector by employment with 8,910 jobs. Second-ranked industrial machinery and equipment increased 5%, and currently employs 6,813, while lumber and wood, the state's third largest industrial sector with 4,076 jobs, decreased by 1.8% over the year.
Other sectors that gained jobs over the year included chemicals, up 5.2%; transportation equipment, up 3.4%; rubber/plastics, up 2.7%; and fabricated metals, up 2.3%. Losses were seen in furniture/fixtures, down 6.4%; primary metals down 3.6%; stone/clay/glass down 3%; textiles/apparel, down 2.2%; and paper products, down 2.1%.
Manufacturers' News reports the Southeast region of the state accounts for the most industrial employment with 25,790 jobs, up 1.9% over the year. The Northeast region is home to 15,838 jobs, up 2.3%, while the Southwest accounts for 4,126 jobs, down 1% over the past twelve months. The Northwest is home to 1,806 jobs, up 2.9%, according to MNI.
MNI's city data shows Sioux Falls is South Dakota's top city for manufacturing employment, home to 12,267 jobs, up a half percent over the year. Second-ranked Brookings accounts for 4,336 jobs, up 2%. Industrial employment in Rapid City decreased 1% and is currently home to 3,520 industrial workers. Watertown accounts for 3,316 industrial jobs, up 2.3%, while Yankton accounts for 2,877 jobs, up 1%.
