Infertility Solutions Releases Pregnancy Results for Its In Vitro Maturation (IVM) Program for 2011
ALLENTOWN, Pa., March 21, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- In vitro maturation or IVM is a new IVF procedure which does not use medications to stimulate the ovaries. Immature eggs are harvested from women's ovaries without stimulation. The eggs are matured in the laboratory and then fertilized and transferred as they are with IVF. Infertility Solutions, P.C. has been providing IVM to patients for two years. For the calendar year 2011, they report an ongoing pregnancy rate of 43.8% for IVM cycle starts in women below age 35.
The first IVM baby in this region was conceived at Infertility Solutions in January 2011. Dr. Bruce I. Rose, the medical director of Infertility Solutions, P.C., reports that "Our IVM program continues to evolve and I believe it is getting better. For example, last year we had a 13% cycle cancellation rate, but this year there were no cycle cancellations. All patients who started an IVM cycle had a chance of conceiving."
According to Dr. Rose, "IVM has been well-received by patients. It is simpler for them to do than conventional IVF. They take many less medications. They don't have side effects from high doses of gonadotropins. They don't require much blood testing. The decrease in monitoring and medication reduces the cost of the cycle by about 50%." Dr. Rose says, "The greatest benefit is for patients with infertility due to polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCO or PCOS). Patients with PCO are often at high risk for the most significant complication of IVF - namely, severe ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome. This is a condition in which a woman's abdomen fills with fluid that has leaked from her blood vessels and may cause severe enough dehydration to require hospitalization. With IVM, since the ovaries are not stimulated, there is no risk of severe ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome occurring."
Not all women are candidates for an IVM procedure. Dr. Rose says, "Currently we only recommend IVM for infertile women who are under age 35 and for whom pelvic ultrasound reveals what is known as a high antral follicle count. About one-third of women under age 35 are good candidates for IVM. Most women have no way of knowing if they are good candidates or not. We can determine it easily by performing a pelvic ultrasound."
