Wounded Warrior Project Alumni Come Together for Target Practice and Archery
HONESDALE, Pa., Feb. 3, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- A group of Wounded Warrior Project® (WWP) Alumni recently gathered together to enjoy an afternoon of camaraderie and to hone their skills at an indoor shooting range.
This event is part of the WWP Alumni program, which creates support through shared experiences. WWP provides long-term support and camaraderie by bringing injured veterans together. Many wounded service members face similar challenges adjusting to their injuries and civilian life. By bonding at events and programs, these veterans learn they are not alone. The Wounded Warrior Project Alumni program is one of 20 free programs and services WWP offers to wounded service members.
Marianne Sheehan, WWP Alumnus, said "It's always good to be around other veterans, and needed for someone like myself. I get it, I'm not alone. But that doesn't make it any less lonely. When I'm surrounded by people who understand…for a moment I feel okay, even happy like 'wow, I belong to a team again' and there's nothing more powerful than that."
WWP Alumni received a thorough safety briefing from range safety officers, then divided into groups to shoot pistols, rifles, submachine guns, and bows at the live fire range or archery range featuring paper zombies and small targets.
WWP Alumnus, Nicholas Sansevero, says he always enjoys a day on any range. "Maintaining my shooting skills is a mental and physical positive for me. On this day, I must say the archery range was my favorite. I am fairly new to archery and with some guidance from the instructor and a little tweaking I vastly improved my knowledge of the sport as well as my accuracy," he said.
"My experience with WWP events has always been positive and I encourage other Alumni to take part," Sansevero said. "I met Alumni, Veterans, and civilians that I have never met before. It's unfortunate that some of us live so close yet don't know each other because we can be a helpful resource for each other."
Following the range, the group had lunch at Pennsyltucky Grille where a patron unexpectedly picked up lunch for the group of veterans. The group also had a chance to learn more about available WWP programs and services for wounded service members, their caregivers, and families.
