RIVERSIDE, Calif., March 21, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- In advance of World Water Day on March 22 and as part of Arrowhead® Brand Mountain Spring Water's continued commitment to water stewardship in California, the brand today announced it will extend for a third year the "Crest to Coast" project in partnership with Inland Empire Waterkeeper. This project is meant to improve the watershed of the Santa Ana River and its tributaries over multiple years.
"Over the last two years, Arrowhead employees and other volunteers have worked with Inland Empire Waterkeeper to remove about 22,000 pounds of debris," said Larry A. Lawrence, life-long California resident and Natural Resource Manager for the Arrowhead brand in the state. "We feel so strongly about this work because we consider California home. This year, we are building on our previous success by using data to target cleanups where they are most needed."
Last year, the "Crest to Coast" project implemented the California Water Board's Rapid Trash Assessment protocol, a data collection tool that is helping provide clues on sources of litter in the watershed. Through this data, IEWK has evaluated the types of litter found at the restoration sites and where that litter comes from. This allows the project to target specific geographies where a measureable impact can be made.
"For the first two years of the project, we wanted to bring together people from across the watershed so they can understand how their actions can affect the river," said Megan Brousseau, Program Director for IEWK. "Now we can build on that work to help make the Santa Ana River fishable, swimmable, and drinkable again."
In the coming weeks, the "Crest to Coast" project will be holding several clean-ups in California, bringing together members of the local community. The full list of events can be found here.
"Together, Waterkeeper and Arrowhead will not just feed this community for a day, we will teach them to fish for a lifetime," said Brousseau.
