Innovative Social Media Website Announces New Security Safeguards for Minors

IRVINE, Calif., Oct. 31, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Social media website Sqeeqee.com has announced Terms of Use designed to safeguard minors and others using the site. Though innovative in its approach to the social media scene, Sqeeqee (pronounced "squeaky") says its security policies are based on ones currently in use on other websites and will be subject to revision.

As per Sqeeqee's Terms of Use, all new accounts opened by minors aged 13 through 17 years are to be linked with a parent's or legal guardian's account to protect against misuse and unwanted solicitations. New accounts may not be opened by anyone younger than thirteen years of age.

Minors seeking to open new accounts will see the following notification: "Welcome to Sqeeqee! We have sent a message to your parent(s) / guardian(s) asking them to confirm their relationship to you. You'll be able to use your new Sqeeqee account and all its exciting features just as soon as we receive parent/guardian confirmation."  

The website then sends an automatic notification (using an internal messaging system) to the parent/guardian listed by the minor, asking them to confirm their relationship. Once this is verified Sqeeqee will allow the new user use of the Sqeeqee site and all its features. If Sqeeqee does not receive the necessary confirmation, the account will not be activated.

"These procedures are in line with those commonly used across the social media industry and will be familiar to our younger Sqeeqee users," Ta adds. In addition to Sqeeqee's above registration procedures for minors, they and all other Sqeeqee users are protected by a security feature designed to block inappropriate or offensive content. Sqeeqee users can flag such content for review, and should five Sqeeqee users flag the same user content it is automatically removed from view until a determination is made regarding its appropriateness. Oversight options include re-allowing it, deleting it, or even closing out the offender's account. Sqeeqee also uses SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) encryption to enhance website transaction security.
