International Automakers Support Efforts to Improve Vehicle Safety
ARLINGTON, Va., May 6 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Association of International Automobile Manufacturers (AIAM) today stressed the importance of automotive safety and outlined both opportunities and challenges contained in draft legislation aimed at improving vehicle safety. In testimony before the House Subcommittee on Commerce, Trade, and Consumer Protection, AIAM President and CEO Michael J. Stanton said the Association and its member companies support efforts to improve vehicle safety, address issues raised by recent recalls, and add new engineering resources to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
But Stanton cautioned that NHTSA must be given adequate time and flexibility to study the safety issues in order to make analytic, data-based, technology neutral decisions.
"We are concerned that the rulemaking mandates in the draft bill pre-determine conclusions involving matters currently under active investigation by NHTSA or other Agencies and organizations with recognized expertise," said Stanton. "It would be more appropriate to direct NHTSA to complete these investigations as soon as possible and issue rules based upon a full and comprehensive analysis of these important safety issues."
