International VELUX Award Announces 2010 jury

COPENHAGEN, February 5 /PRNewswire/ -- The International VELUX Award is pleased to announce the jury of the 2010 Award. The jury makes up a distinguished panel of seven jury members with different cultural backgrounds, nationalities and approaches to architecture. The jury will review student projects that explore the theme of daylight in its widest sense and challenge the future of daylight in the built environment.

The jury for the 2010 Award consists of six practicing and teaching architects from all parts of the world, including Momoyo Kaijima (Japan), Will Bruder (USA), Nathalie de Vries (The Netherlands), Kim Herforth Nielsen (Denmark), Magda Mostafa (Egypt),and Stefano Musso (Italy). Keith Riddle (UK) represents VELUX on the jury.

Multi-faceted jury

The works of the jury members are wide-ranging, representing every scale of architecture from small-scale residential buildings to large scale urban design:

Japanese Momoyo Kaijima formed Atelier Bow-Wow together with Yoshiharu Tsukamoto in Tokyo in 1992. The office champions a site- and use- specific design approach to the new millennium. The two founders have coined the phrase "pet architecture," which is a style of small multi-functional structures that make the most of limited space in densely developed cities like Tokyo. The concept integrates need, improvisation and ingenuity. Momoyo Kaijima has written several books and teaches at universities and schools of architecture in Japan and in other countries around the world.

American architect Will Bruder has explored inventive architectural solutions for more than 40 years. He is a craftsman in his concern for detail and building processes, and a sculptor in his unique blending of space, materials and light. As a self-trained architect, Will Bruder holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in sculpture supplemented by studies in structural engineering, philosophy and art history followed by a full architectural apprenticeship before he opened his own studio in 1974. Will Bruder has held several teaching positions in North America and is a noted lecturer on the subject of architecture, sustainability and urbanism.

Dutch Nathalie de Vries is one of the co-founding directors of MVRDV, famous for its pursuit of radical methodical research on density and on public realms. Projects of MVRDV are among others the design for the Netherlands Pavilion at the Hannover World Expo 2000, the innovative business park Flight Forum in Eindhoven, the Matsudai cultural centre and the Gyre shopping centre in Japan, the iconic Mirador building in Madrid and the Silodam building and Lloyd Hotel in Amsterdam. Currently projects are under way in the Netherlands, Switzerland, Spain, Austria, France, England, Albania, the USA, China and India.

Nathalie de Vries lectures and teaches throughout the world and takes part in international juries. She has been guest professor at the TU Berlin (2002-2004) and is the 2005 Morgenstern Visiting Critic at the IIT in Chicago. She has also been teaching at the Berlage Institute in Rotterdam, the ABK in Arnhem and the TU of Delft.

Kim Herforth Nielsen is founder and principal of the Danish studio 3XN, and ever since he has been the driving force behind 3XN. Kim Herforth Nielsen has received Denmark's highest architectural honor, the C.F. Hansen Medaille. He is one of the three Nielsen-founders who started 3XN in 1986, and has been involved in all the practice's major projects, including a.o. Kubus in Berlin, Museum of Liverpool, 0restad College in Copenhagen, Muziekgebouw Concert Hall in Amsterdam and the Danish Embassy in Berlin. Currently projects are under development in Denmark, Ireland, Germany and the Netherlands. Kim Herforth Nielsen is often called upon as a jury member in international architectural competitions and as lecturer at art academies and universities around the world.

Canadian born, Egyptian Magda Mostafa is Associate Professor of Design at the Department of Architectural Engineering at Cairo University where she has taught since 1996. Graduating from Cairo University her doctoral dissertation focused on architectural design for children with special needs. In 2004, in association with Progressive Architects, she completed the design of the Advance School for Children with Autism in Qattemeya, Cairo. Magda Mostafa is an active member of the Union of International Architects and represents UIA, the International Union of Architects, on the jury.

Stefano Musso from Italy graduated in architecture in 1984, and he holds a Ph.D. in Building and Environmental Rehabilitation. At present he is professor at the Faculty of Architecture and Engineering at the University of Genoa, Italy, teaching Architectural Restoration. As a scientific consultant, Stefano Musso has contributed to several studies and surveys of ancient monuments and settlements. He has published a large number of articles on the subject of restoration. Stefano Musso is Vice President of the European Association of Architectural Education and represents EAAE, the European Association for Architectural Education, on the jury.

Keith Riddle represents VELUX on the jury. He is the general manager of VELUX in Great Britain and Ireland. He holds as MA (Honours) in History from the University of Edinburgh and Masters in Business Administration (MBA) at the University of Durham. Keith Riddle was former Business Unit Director in Diageo GB until he joined VELUX in 2003.

Altogether, jury has been composed to strike the right balance between tradition, innovation, age, gender and geography as well as world experience and multicultural orientation. A new jury is appointed for each Award in order to allow a wide scope of daylight interpretations and concepts. UIA and EAAE are represented on the jury every year.

The 2010 Award is the fourth edition of the International VELUX Award, and the registration deadline is 1 March 2010. Students need to register to be able to submit their project.
