Introducing Sprinkl: Water and Money Savings in One Sleek Product
A Dallas startup is developing next-generation smart irrigation to tackle residential water issues
DALLAS, Nov. 17, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- It's smart automation for the lawn that learns as it grows. Sprinkl's new take on automatic sprinkler technology features wireless sensors and auto compliance with municipal watering restrictions -- differences that are setting them apart in the market. The product is gaining momentum in the DFW startup community, and that could mean good news for drought-fighting homeowners across the country. The team at Sprinkl develops smart irrigation controllers capable of cutting water usage by up to 50 percent, which drives a water efficiency gain that can save users up to 50 percent on their watering bills.
This innovative system is comprised of a patent-pending controller and multiple sensor units. Each weatherproof wireless sensor unit relays soil measurements back to the controller using a mesh radio frequency (RF) network, where additional information, such as local watering restrictions, is used to determine per-zone watering schedules. Sprinkl is built on the Android operating system (OS) and runs on a 1-gigahertz (GHz) processor — the combination equals unheard of power and performance when compared to traditional irrigation controllers.
Sprinkl is perfect for customers who want a smarter, more intuitive watering system for their lawns and landscapes that will save in both water usage and on bills. The system may also attract early tech adopters and developers for its extendable, open API design; gearing Sprinkl up to be the next thing in the modern digital household.
The team at Sprinkl consists of Dallas, Texas residents Noel Geren and Daniel Pruessner, who have been developing the product for over a year. They unveiled the Sprinkl Residential Controller at the September Dallas New Tech event held by Launch DFW. Now they are transitioning the product for a full-market launch and are using Kickstarter to crowdfund the needed capital this month for a 2015 release. Soon, homes across the country could be utilizing Sprinkl — the powerful, smart irrigation system.
"The internet is at turning point in the home. Lighting and HVAC controllers have really evolved over the past four years, but irrigation and lawn care technology have been lagging behind," said Geren, Managing Member of Sprinkl. "With Sprinkl we wanted to bring an evolutionary product to market; a gorgeous and extensible Android touch based controller that can automatically determine how much water to use per-zone, saving up to 50% on monthly watering bills and preserving earth's precious resources."
Sprinkl develops next-generation smart irrigation controllers capable of cutting water usage (and water bills) by up to 50 percent. Sprinkl is built on an Android core with a Linux 3.8 kernel running on a 1GHz ARM processor, making it one of the most powerful irrigation controllers on the market.
