IoT China 2014 & CVITS Expo 2014 kicked off in Shanghai

SHANGHAI, Nov. 9, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- As an important component of the events that took place during Shanghai Intelligent City Week, IoT China 2014 & CVITS Expo 2014, in the form of conferences and expos, were held in ShanghaiMart on October 28 and 29.

The themes for this year's exhibition, "IoT: Leading the Intelligent Life" and "IoT: Leading the Intelligent Travel", focused on three major topics: Internet of Things (IoT), Internet of Vehicles (IoV) and Intelligent Transport. A wide range of topics including cutting-edge IoT technologies, intelligent city and community, IoV/intelligent transport, intelligent medical care, intelligent agricultural and food safety, IoT investment and financing match-making, among others, were touched upon during the Expo. More than 100 exhibitors from Britain, Germany, Holland, France, Japan, the United States, Sweden, Slovenia, South Korea, Russia, mainland China and Taiwan displayed their wares and services across the 6,000 square meter exhibition space. Nearly 100 guest speakers from China and around the world delivered speeches at the Forum. Estimated attendance tallies indicate that around 8,000 industry professionals visited the event while 1,500 professionals attended the conferences.

Cross-border cooperation to build a new IoT ecosystem

IoT, the internet of things, after several years of rapid development, has evolved from traditional forms of cooperation within the communication industry into a cross-border cooperation opportunity with industry leaders in areas such as automotive, transport, healthcare, agriculture, home appliances, and capital management. IoT provides unique and powerful features in connectivity, mobility and cooperation across all walks of life in an urban setting, not only opening up brand new areas for exploration and development but also creating unlimited business opportunities. It is safe to say that a new IoT ecosystem is already taking shape and the participants in this formation have demonstrated their strength "intelligently" at the Expo.

During this year's event, keynote speeches and interactive demonstrations were used to elaborate "IoV", one of two of the most important components of this year's expo. Star proponents of the "networked vehicle" include Ford, Toyota, General Motors, SAIC Motor, QOROS, Geely and BYD, as well as communication operators Onstar (whose systems are installed in new Cadillacs), China Mobile (in Highlanders), China Unicom (in BMWs) and China Telecom (in the VW Magotan) have equipped some 14 vehicle models with all-new IoT apps, demonstrating how the car has become the model for showcasing the possibilities offered by IoT and the applications of information that the technology offers. These collaborative efforts, which highlight how IoT and the application of information is at the core of an intelligent, convenient and efficient IoT era, are leading to the accomplishment of the integration of the in-the-vehicle network, the inter-vehicle network and the vehicle-borne mobile internet.

"Intelligent" experience 2: IoT in transport opens the way to intelligent parking

The "Intelligent transport" section is an exhibition area jointly set up by the Expo, the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Economy and Informatization and Shanghai Municipal Commission of Construction and Transportation. The Highway Scientific Research Institute under the Ministry of Transport, the Shanghai Electrical Apparatus Research Institute, the Third Research Institute of the Ministry Of Public Security and China Unionpay, among others, discussed topics and shared cases on the construction of intelligent transport and intelligent parking management systems with a special focus on park and pay systems and the implications for development trends in the car rental sector. For the first time in history, "intelligent parking", as an independent topic, was included.

"Intelligent" experience 3: health-related IoT ushers in a new era for healthcare

Practices that could barely have been imagined in the past, such as mobile ward rounds, mobile nursing, mobile first-aid, remote medical care and health monitoring, are now becoming realistic possibilities as a result of IoT. IoT authorities in the medical field including delegates from China Shanghai Zhongshan Hospital, Shanghai Children's Hospital, Shanghai First Maternity and Infant Hospital Corporation, Shanghai Fifth People's Hospital affiliated to Fudan University, Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (SHUTCM), Shanghai Municipal Commission of Economy and Informatization, Shanghai Municipal Commission of Health and Family Planning, Shanghai Municipal Bureau of Civil Affairs, Shanghai Municipal Food and Drug Supervision Administration and representatives from the government of the European Union, as well as several other organizations, have each taken turns in showcasing futuristic applications during the Expo, including digital and remote medical care, big data and cloud technology, health management as well as wearable devices, among others, including mobile phone-based hospital mobile applications, which have been developed under the newly-launched "intelligent medical care" program.

"Intelligent" experience 4: IoT of agriculture will accelerate the implementation of food tracking and food safety monitoring

The intelligent agriculture and food safety sub-forum, one of the four major sub-forums, provided a venue for industry experts from the EU, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan in tandem with professors from Shanghai Agricultural IoT Application Engineering and Technology Research Center and Fudan University as well as representatives from Chinese companies who shared case studies on solutions in the area of food safety and intelligent agriculture. In addition, the China-EU Intelligent Agriculture/Food Safety Cooperation Accelerator Sub-Forum served as the venue where discussions on issues concerning Chinese market entry and industry standards, and cooperation opportunities for China and the EU took place.

"Intelligent" experience 5: The EU-China IoT Forum serves as a kick-off point for building the super-intelligent city of the future

During the seven years from 2007 to 2013, the 7th Framework Programme, initiated by the European Union and implemented by IoT European Research Cluster (IERC), with a budget of 50.521 billion Euros, has yielded fruitful results. Under the backdrop of China-EU IoT cooperation and integration, IERC joined hands with the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of China as hosts of the "China-EU IoT Forum", which focused on four major themes: IoV/ITS, intelligent agriculture/food safety, intelligent medical care, and intelligent city/cutting-edge technologies. As the pilot districts of the intelligent urban community in Shanghai, Pudong and Yangpu districts each had exhibition pavilions that were showcased at the Expo.
