Iowa Home Improvement Company Practices Responsible Remodeling
DES MOINES, Iowa, March 31, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Brian Buresh was looking for ways to reduce waste in his remodeling business. For every new window, kitchen cabinet, and exterior door his company installed – an equal number of slightly used items needed a new home. Often that meant a trip to the local landfill. Through Habitat for Humanity, Buresh found a solution and initiated a plan for responsible remodeling.
Habitat for Humanity's ReStore is a resale outlet that sells reusable and surplus building materials, such as windows, doors, and fixtures to the public for a fraction of the retail price. There are currently ReStore locations in 48 states in U.S. and all throughout Canada. Proceeds from each ReStore outlet help local Habitat affiliates fund the construction of Habitat homes within their communities.
By donating materials Buresh is thinking globally and acting locally - a welcome combination of environmental and economic strategies.
"Of course, we always take great care when working around a customer's home," said Buresh. "But now we are extra careful with things like cabinets that we remove during a kitchen remodel because we know they're going to the ReStore and probably into another home just down the street."
Buresh acknowledges that the actions of a single residential remodeling contractor may seem miniscule in the scheme of things, but he hopes his commitment to "Responsible Remodeling" will inspire others in his industry to make similar pledges to reuse and recycle construction materials whenever possible. In addition to donating materials for resale, Buresh also recycles all of the asphalt shingles removed during roofing jobs.
According to the EPA, nearly 53 million tons of used building materials end up in landfills each year. Even more startling is that much of that waste, perhaps 90 percent, can be recycled.
