Ipanema Technologies needed an automated solution to enable faster testing of software components developed across its supply chain of internal teams, open source providers, sub- contractors, and third-party vendors at integration time in order to meet its rapid delivery cycles. Manual code review was found to be too expensive to be done systematically and functional tests identified defects after integration, which was too late in the process. Coverity was chosen as the preferred solution due to the accuracy of analysis, superior visibility into code branches, simple configuration, clear defect presentation and management processes, and easy to understand defect reports for third-party software providers. Every night, the software development team runs Coverity to verify defects in any incremental code changes in addition to submitting the entire codebase to a complete verification once per week. This verification process ensures that Coverity provides valuable feedback to developers without disturbing normal development processes. All critical defects must be fixed immediately upon detection. Coverity is also run when a new code drop is delivered from third-party suppliers, at which time defects are assigned to the Ipanema developer responsible for source code integration of that component and a weekly report is created for the provider for quick remediation.
