SANTA BARBARA, Calif., April 15, 2014 /PRNewswire/ --
The Challenge
Steven Handelman Studios' was recently featured on the front page of the Home and Garden section of the Santa Barbara News Press. In the article, founder and lead designer, Steven Handelman tells the story of how he was given the opportunity to transform the work of Samuel Yellin, the most famous ironworker of the 20th Century. While working for Ron Burns, a retired executive from advertising giant, J. Walter Thompson, "an interesting and challenging project emerged." What Ron proposed was to take the 1920's Yellin-designed entryways that had graced the New York offices of J. Walter Thompson and re-purpose them into something personal and useful for his new home in Santa Barbara.

The Transformation
Handelman said, "Fortunately, Ron had purchased one of the entryways that had been slated for demolition. During his long tenure at Thompson, he had admired the beautiful wrought iron craftsmanship and felt compelled to save this historic work of art that had been an important part his long career. Ron arranged to have the ironwork crated and shipped to my factory in Santa Barbara. We considered several ideas of how to transform the Yellin entries. Ultimately, we decided to re-make them into a bedroom set consisting of a king size headboard and two bedside tables."
The Completion
Handelman wanted to ensure that the pieces were recreated in a way to preserve the masterful work of Yellin. The intricately fabricated iron doorways, with their spiral design, punctuated with rosettes, made this a complex task. When the bedroom set was installed in the Burns home, Ron and Sally were delighted. Ron said, "Steven came up with the right solution, and we couldn't be more satisfied with the results." Handelman reported to the Santa Barbara News Press: "During my long career as a designer and artisan, I have had several of my clients compare me to Yellin. It was a privilege to be able to give a new life to the work of the greatest iron artisan of the 20th century, Samuel Yellin."
