IRS Commissioner Shulman to Deliver Keynote Speech at Tax Council Policy Institute Annual Symposium
February Event in Washington, D.C., to Focus on Tax Risk Issues
WASHINGTON, Jan. 24, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- The Tax Council Policy Institute (TCPI) announced today that Douglas H. Shulman, commissioner of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), will deliver the opening keynote speech at its 13th Annual Tax Policy and Practice Symposium, scheduled for Feb.15-16 at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Washington, D.C.
The two-day TCPI symposium, "The New Realities of Tax Risk Management: Navigating risk in a complex world," will bring together leading professionals and policymakers from government, industry, and academia in panel and discussion forums, to take an in-depth look at the critical tax risk issues facing U.S. business today.
"Commissioner Shulman is a distinguished and influential voice in the nation's government, and we are honored to have him open our upcoming tax policy and practice symposium," said Lynda K. Walker, Esq., executive director and general counsel of TCPI.
"During Commissioner Shulman's tenure at the IRS, the service has played a major role in our nation's economic recovery efforts, in stepped-up activities on international and corporate fronts in the face of the increasing globalization of tax administration, and in efforts to ensure the high standards of ethics and service across the tax preparation industry," Walker added. "We look forward to hearing his insights on the importance and scope of tax risk management now and in the future."
As the 47th Commissioner of the IRS, Shulman has emphasized the necessity of maintaining a balance between taxpayer service and tax enforcement. His goals for the IRS include improving service to make voluntary compliance easier for taxpayers while at the same time enforcing the law to make sure everyone meets their obligation to pay the taxes they owe.
Commissioner Shulman came to the IRS from the Financial Regulatory Authority (FINRA), the private-sector regulator of all securities firms doing business in the United States, where he served as vice chairman. He served in the same role at the National Association of Securities Dealers (NASD) before its 2007 consolidation with New York Stock Exchange Member Regulation, which resulted in the formation of FINRA. He also held many key leadership roles while at the NASD.
Topics to be addressed at the TCPI symposium will include: managing the risk of fundamental tax reform; understanding how the government's perception of tax risk may drive guidance and enforcement; considering the possibility of a territorial tax system for multi-national businesses; and the importance of reputational risk in today's global business environment.
KPMG LLP, the U.S. audit, tax and advisory firm, is the program manager for the 2012 event, which is targeted at CFOs, vice presidents of finance and tax, attorneys, accountants, and controllers from companies large and small.
