Is AA's 12 Step Recovery Program/Religion a Failure? You decide!
BAYVILLE, N.Y., June 6, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Rolf Ankermann's evolutionary new book, The Freedom to Recover, http://www.thefreedomtorecover.com does not offer a "program" for sobriety but rather, suggests a complete reversal of how alcoholism and addiction should be both viewed and addressed. The goal should be to RECOVER, not to be in a perpetual state of recovering "one day at a time" for eternity. Those suffering from the throes of addiction need not, as the organization of Alcoholics Anonymous suggests, declare themselves as being powerless with a need to surrender their will and their life to some higher power, whether that be God or the organization of AA itself.

The first half of the book debunks the faulty logic of the antiquated 12 step model that emphasizes surrender, guilt and character defects. Rather, Rolf suggests that one should utilize the gift of freewill and embrace the ability and responsibility to make choices that go along with it. We all have the power to overcome obstacles and be the determining factor that dictates the direction and purpose of our lives.
Dr. Steve Zvi Yadin, Ph.D., of the Stony Brook University School of Medicine says; "All too often, people are looking for an easy outside quick fix for problems that are often solvable through an individual's own inner resources. It is for this reason that I find Mr. Ankermann's ideas to be both insightful and practical, and believe that they should ultimately be successful for many of those suffering from alcoholism."
The second half of the book takes the reader on a journey of self-discovery in which they will learn methods to improve their decision making abilities and to control the inner dialog that takes place in everybody's mind. Healthy ways of viewing one's past, living in the present with intent and being the creator of one's future are explored extensively.
Virtually the entire recovery industry has embraced AA's 12 Step religion as the most viable recourse for the suffering alcoholic. It's time for that to change! Dr. Yadin adds; "As a result of having read The Freedom to Recover , I will never view addiction in quite the same way. I highly recommend it to both the addiction treatment community and the suffering alcoholic."

Rolf Ankermann's authority on the subject of alcoholism/addiction comes from the school of hard knocks. His many attempts to achieve sobriety included two separate 30 day rehab stints, hospital outpatient services, psychotherapy, and finally several hundred AA meetings that were highly "suggested" by the aforementioned recovery experts. Through exhaustive self-reflection, extensive research in the areas of psychology and human nature, he discovered that the ability to overcome addiction is readily attainable if one forgives their past, participates in and accepts the present, and embraces the future.
