JACKSONVILLE, Fla., Dec. 26, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Island Doctors is proud to announce the appointment of Readus C. Smith, III as Health Education Commissioner for the Florida Central Second Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction (FCSEJ) of the Church of God in Christ. "This couldn't have happened at a better time. We made a commitment to impact the communities we serve five months ago," affirmed Dr. Roy H. Hinman, II, Chief Medical Officer- Island Doctors. "Many people make New Year's resolutions to rid themselves of bad habits, improve health, and lose weight, just to name a few. Our jurisdiction is blessed to have its own "Health & Wellness Coach," to motivate and offer education on the epidemic rise of diseases like diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and obesity," acknowledged Bishop Edward Robinson, Sr.
Commissioner Smith has been appointed by Bishop Robinson to educate, promote healthy communities, and continue to improve the quality of health care in the FCSEJ. "As commissioner of Health Education for the FCSEJ, my duties entail oversight in the following areas: building healthier communities, raising awareness about programs to reverse or slow progression of disease , educate on programs that are "low to no cost and available now" to the public, and to create partnerships with corporate health entities and the community," states the Commissioner.
Through a partnership with some of the state's leading corporations, Commissioner Smith is working to reduce the epidemic rise of diabetes, while closing the gap and disparity of access to healthcare within Florida communities. With targeted campaigns throughout NE FL, Commissioner Smith feels that 2014 will show that the FCSEJ can be the catalyst for health models across the nation.
Commissioner Smith has received a Master of Science degree in Corporate Operations from LaSalle University and serves as a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives. He serves within the church as a licensed and ordained elder.
Initiatives to start in 2014 are listed below:
- Health Sunday - Monthly Initiative across churches throughout the FCSEJ promoting awareness, prevention and treatment of diseases affecting senior citizens.
