Island Doctors launches Dietary Health Initiative with Farm To Family, providing complimentary health screenings and dietary education to the mobile farmer's market shoppers at "Food Deserts" and other under-served areas where fresh produce is not easily accessible
Physician group heightens community awareness of healthy dietary choices and weight loss techniques to avoid debilitating diseases including diabetes, stroke and heart disease.
ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla., Feb. 9, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Island doctors today announced the launch of its partnership with Farm To Family in its St. John's Dietary Health Initiative which features a mobile farmer's market with locally-grown, fresh-picked produce, while also offering complimentary health screenings and dietary tips for overall health improvement.
"We are pleased to have successfully launched the first of four dietary health initiatives in conjunction with Farm To Family. Our team enjoys working in the community to provide vital information. Complimentary screenings provide us the additional opportunity to discuss our strategies for health improvement, which include a copy of the Triangle Diet and prepared recipe cards," said Marcus Williams, Community Liaison, Island Doctors.
"It's never too late to improve your health. Many life-threatening illnesses can be effectively managed through a few simple lifestyle modifications which we suggest at our community outreach programs. Our partnership with Farm to Family is a perfect opportunity for people to initiate many of these recommendations on the spot, by buying the freshest fruits and vegetables and preparing them in a way that makes healthy sense," stated Roy Hinman II, MD, Chief Medical Officer for Island Doctors.
The Farm To Family produce truck and Island Doctors' health screening tent will set-up each Thursday during February for select hours at four "food desert" locations in St. John's County. A food desert has been designated as a location where residents have limited or no access to healthy, fresh foods, commonly in low-income neighborhoods. "The mobile market also will accept as payment benefits from SNAP, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program," said Malea Guiriba, a spokeswoman for the Farm To Family project.
