Jacobs-NASA Parachute Tests Succeed to Land Future Moon and Mars Missions
DALLAS, Sept. 27, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Jacobs Engineering Group Inc. (NYSE:JEC): A team of Jacobs and NASA engineers successfully completed tests of the Capsule Parachute Assembly System this month. The re-entry system is critical to safely return astronauts aboard the Orion space capsule back to Earth from planned missions to the moon.
For the 8th and final qualification trial held at the U.S. Army Proving Ground in Yuma, Arizona, an Orion test capsule was dropped from a C-17 aircraft at an altitude of 35,000 feet to verify the spacecraft's re-entry system, a complex assembly of 11 parachutes, cannon-like mortars and pyrotechnic devices that work in sequence to slow the capsule's descent for a safe landing on Earth.

Among more than 4,000 Jacobs people who support NASA, a team of more than 50 engineers and technicians worked with the agency in Houston over a span of more than 12 years to provide design, development and test services for the mission-critical parachute system. To date, such tests have evaluated Orion's parachute performance for various circumstances, including normal landing sequences, several failure scenarios and a variety of potential aerodynamic conditions to ensure the safe return of astronauts from deep space missions.
