The global beer industry is expected to reach a value of USD 575 billion by 2017 , according to Analyzing the Global Beer Industry 2015, a report from Research and Markets. The report notes how industry consolidation has become a marked trend within the global beer industry, and this was proven true today with news of Japan's Asahi Group Holdings intention to buy the Peroni and Grolsch beer brands from SABMiller for more than USD 3.5 billion.

With a 38% market share, Asahi is Japan's biggest brewer. The company is said to be keen to access new markets outside of Japan, which has seen dwindling beer sales due to a decreasing population as highlighted in a recent report. The acquisition of Peroni and Grolsch gives Asahi direct access to the Italian and Dutch beer markets, and an easy entry point to the general European beer market.

The European beer market is forecast to grow with a CAGR of 1.94% by 2019, as noted in a TechNavio report. The purchasing of Peroni and Grolsch by Asahi could lead to an increase in this percentage, as the Japanese company are likely to invest heavily into the marketing of both brands. The acquisition of the two European brands could also lead to a growth in the Japan beer market with Asahi offering Japanese customers European beers for lower prices.
