"I'm trying to make sure that people remember the great players from the past," Mercurio explains. "My books show you not only the present record, but what the old records were, who held them and for how long." Other baseball books eliminate old records when new ones are created. This bothered Mercurio in 1985, when the Baseball Hall of Fame couldn't tell him who held more records: Ty Cobb or Babe Ruth. Over five years, he found his answer and invented a new approach to baseball research: Chronology record keeping.

The Baseball Hall of Fame has called on Mercurio to settle record disputes. Former American League President Bobby Brown calls his work "a baseball treasure."
