MANTEO, N.C., May 9, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- The Lost Colony will open its 79^th season May 27 and run through August 20, 2016 at Manteo's Waterside Theatre, on North Carolina's Outer Banks. The story is one of America's unsolved mysteries. The elaborate production details the drama and hope of colonizing the new world and the mysterious tragedy that befell 117 British settlers. The magnificent outdoor stage comes to life as the day draws to an end. The choreography, lighting, sound and music propel you to the highs and lows of this captivating and still unsolved mystery while the talented cast will make you laugh and cry.

Renowned Production Designer William Ivey Long has expertly crafted the pageantry of Queen Elizabeth, simplicity of the colonists and vibrant culture of the Native Americans for The Lost Colony.

The Lost Colony cast delivers emotional performances as they tell gripping story of America’s longest running symphonic drama.

The Lost Colony seats you in the center of the action with the show happening on three sides as well as in the aisles.

The Lost Colony has made several enhancements for the 2016 season.

Lighting designer, Joshua Allen brings all new lighting equipment and techniques to both enhance the production and better accommodate the earlier start time of 7:30 p.m. while choreographer Pam Atha has added exciting changes to the opening and closing dances for the show that are sure to delight. An upgraded sound system was added to provide a more cinematic experience for the audience.

In collaboration with the "Every Kid in a Park" program, all fourth graders for the 2016 season will be admitted free, and in celebration of the National Park Service centennial, The Lost Colony storyteller will be outfitted as a park ranger.

Show times are 7:30PM Monday – Saturday; Doors open at 7:00PM.

Also new for 2016, The Children's Theatre at The Lost Colony will feature Stellaluna and Other Tales Tickets are $10 for all ages with shows at 2:00PM every Tuesday and Wednesday, June 14th - August 17th. This musical is based on the beloved children's book of the same name by Janell Cannon, which teaches the importance of self-confidence through music and the storytelling.

The Lost Colony, recipient of the 2013 Tony Honor for Excellence in Theatre, is America's longest running outdoor symphonic drama. The show is produced by the Roanoke Island Historical Association, whose mission is to commemorate the history of the first English colonies in North America on Roanoke Island, North Carolina. The Lost Colony takes place at Manteo Waterside Theatre's 5,000 square foot stage, a sprawling outdoor venue which surrounds the audience.
