PHILADELPHIA, Sept. 23, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- On Sept. 25, the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) will present Joseph Rogers with its 2013 Lifetime Achievement Voice Award. The event will take place at Paramount Theater at Paramount Studios, 5555 Melrose Ave., Hollywood, California, at 7 p.m. PT.
Joseph Rogers is founder and executive director of the National Mental Health Consumers' Self-Help Clearinghouse, a national technical assistance center funded in part by SAMHSA that fosters recovery, self-determination, and community inclusion. He is chief advocacy officer of the Mental Health Association of Southeastern Pennsylvania, of which he was president and CEO from 1997 to 2007, and which he grew from a small regional advocacy agency into one of the largest mental health associations in the country.
A national leader of the mental health consumer movement, he has played a major role in transforming the movement from a small number of relatively powerless groups and individuals to a large number of well-funded consumer organizations and consumer-operated services in nearly every state. He has testified before the Pennsylvania General Assembly and before U.S. Senate committees and has consulted in more than 30 states, as well as nationally and internationally, on behavioral health policy issues. He has chaired and/or served on numerous boards and committees, and was a key player in the closing of Philadelphia State Hospital and in the successful struggle to get the dollars to follow the patients into the community, to establish what has become a model system of community-based services, including peer-to-peer services. He has appeared on numerous television and radio shows and in the print media to fight the discrimination and prejudice associated with mental health conditions.
Rogers has received numerous awards, including the prestigious Heinz Award for the Human Condition in 2005, the 2002 Outstanding Non-Psychiatrist Award from the American Association of Community Psychiatrists, and the 2009 Timothy Coakley Behavioral Health Leadership Award from the American College of Mental Health Administration.
Since 2005, SAMHSA's Voice Awards program has brought together representatives from the entertainment industry and the behavioral health community for an evening of educational awareness-building about mental and substance use disorders and the power of recovery.
