K2 Medical Research Brings New Clinical Trials Program to Rhode Island, Honors Clinical Research Day 2025

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I., May 19, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- K2 Medical Research is proud to introduce its newest clinical trials program in East Providence, bringing innovative research opportunities to Southern New England. Each year on May 20, the world celebrates Clinical Trials Day, commemorating the first recognized randomized clinical trial conducted by British naval surgeon James Lind in 1747. His pioneering study on scurvy, which identified citrus fruits as a remedy, laid the foundation for modern clinical research. This year's theme highlights the passion and impact of clinical research professionals across the globe. According to the Alzheimer's Association 2025 Facts and Figures, over 7 million Americans are currently living with Alzheimer's disease, supported by nearly 12 million individuals providing unpaid caregiving. The economic impact of this care is estimated at $384 billion. Alzheimer's is now the fifth leading cause of death in the United States, ranking higher than the combined toll of breast and prostate cancer. In Rhode Island alone, approximately 22,000 people are affected by the disease, with 11.4% of adults aged 65 and older living with Alzheimer's.

K2's East Providence site is currently enrolling participants for two Alzheimer's disease studies targeting different stages of the condition, as well as a separate study evaluating an investigational medication for alcohol use disorder. Although new to the area, the K2 team brings over 30 years of combined experience in Alzheimer's research, with deep roots in Rhode Island's clinical landscape.

In celebration of Clinical Trials Day and their East Providence launch, K2 Medical Research will begin hosting educational seminars, community talks, and participate in local summer festivals and health fairs.
