KABINETT launches inaugural SoWa show, Killers & Thrillers

BOSTON, Jan. 9, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Newly located at 450 Harrison Avenue, KABINETT Gallery has officially joined New England's famed South Washington (SoWa) Art + Design District. Among Boston's most prestigious art galleries, KABINETT sets itself apart with works by blue-chip artists that explore edgy themes not available elsewhere in the Boston market. 

"At a time when some artists, curators and collectors are launching challenges to every settled consensus about what is and is not legitimate, and major art institutions are confronting demands to take down or destroy artworks deemed 'offensive,' we want to exhibit works that take risks," says KABINETT Gallery owner and art director Gabriel Boyers says of the inaugural exhibition, "Our commitment is to art that is properly demanding, conceptually rich, diverse, but also very beautiful."

An ambitious and wide-ranging inaugural SoWa show titled Killers & Thrillers opens at KABINETT on January 12, 2018.

This exhibition explores two great mysteries: sex and death, both fertile realms for artists past and present. The burden of the works in this inaugural exhibition questions and probes the connection between the two.

The exhibition features works by more than 50 artists from 200 BC to the present including:

• Original concept cover artwork for the sheet music edition of Billy Strayhorn's iconic song "Lush Life," from the collection of Duke Ellington;
• An extraordinary collection of improvised shanks assembled by the Warden of Folsom Prison, ca. 1950;
• Rare etching of Vincent Van Gogh on his Deathbed, by his doctor, Paul Gachet;
• Monumental Knife and Brass Knuckle sculptures by Philippe Perrin;
• An ancient Chinese Warring States Bronze Short Sword;
• Collection of 1943/44 "Practice Bomb" artworks made by a US Army soldier;
• Limited edition glass human heart sculpture multiples commissioned exclusively for Killers & Thrillers by Brazilian artist Ilua Hauck da Silva, longlisted artist for 2012 Aesthetica Art Prize.
