Kentucky Real-Time System Achieves Significant 2011 Results in Battle Against Meth
Electronic Technology Blocks Illegal Sales & Allows Legal Ones
LUTHERVILLE, Md., Feb. 6, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- The National Association of Drug Diversion Investigators (NADDI) – a nonprofit organization that facilitates cooperation between law enforcement, healthcare professionals, state regulatory agencies and pharmaceutical manufacturers in the prevention and investigation of drug diversion – today lauded the results achieved by the real-time, stop-sale system in Kentucky. Throughout 2011, results released by the National Precursor Log Exchange (NPLEx) show electronic technology in the Bluegrass State blocked the sale of more than 32,000 boxes of medicines containing pseudoephedrine (PSE) from being sold keeping a total of more than 78,000 grams out of the hands of meth criminals during the last year.
"Kentucky's real-time, stop-sale technology has demonstrated that it is an effective tool in the fight against methamphetamine production. NPLEx stops illegal pseudoephedrine sales right at the counter, ensures that responsible Kentuckians are not restricted from accessing safe and affordable medicines and provides law enforcement officials with a critical new tool in the fight against meth," said Charles F. Cichon, executive director of the National Association of Drug Diversion Investigators (NADDI). "The prevention of more than 78,000 grams in unlawful PSE sales last year is proof positive that NPLEx is stopping meth crimes before they happen. Members of the Kentucky Legislature should continue using and improving upon this proven method, rather than burdening responsible Kentuckians with a prescription mandate."
