"Water use and treatment in the Marcellus Shale is a major issue for drilling companies, local citizens and environmental regulators alike. In the past four years, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection has issued more than 2,000 permits for new Marcellus wells. Each frac uses 3 to 5 million gallons of water, and 10 to 30 percent returns to the surface for treatment," said David Grottenthaler, general manager of Kroff, Inc., who will present on behalf of subsidiary Kroff Well Services, Inc. "At Kroff, we have the expertise and the technology to develop treatability studies, remediation strategies, and confirmation of water quality and performance, which are all necessary components of safe and effective water reuse in the Marcellus Shale and beyond."
Grottenthaler has three decades of experience with water treatment and now focuses his efforts on frac fluid designs and water remediation for reuse in the oil and gas industry. His knowledge of fluid design formulation and water treatment quality for safe and effective reuse of frac water provides a dual perspective from both sides of critical water issues. At the November conference, Grottenthaler's presentation will focus on the reuse of flowback for the development of high-rate, high-volume shale gas fracturing.
"At Kroff, ours is a systems approach to water remediation, and we have definitively determined that frac water reuse is more economically and environmentally responsible than release or disposal," Grottenthaler added.
DUG East is presented by the Unconventional Gas Center to provide a forum for the most active companies pursuing the Marcellus Shale, as well as experts in many areas that will contribute to the success of the region. DUG East gives operators, investors, and the service industry the latest economics, activity, and new technology needed to successfully develop the Marcellus. The conference and exhibition will be held at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center in downtown Pittsburgh.
