Labelmaster Releases GHS White Paper For Chemical Industry
Helps Chemical Manufacturers Comply With OSHA's 2012 Hazcom Standard
CHICAGO, May 29, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Labelmaster®, a leading manufacturer and distributor of regulatory compliance products, today announced the publication of GHS Impact on U.S. Chemical Manufacturers: Regulatory Changes and Practical Guidance, a white paper detailing the implications of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) aligning its 2012 Hazard Communication Standard (HCS) with the United Nations' Globally Harmonized System (GHS) framework. The paper provides practical guidance for chemical manufacturers as they begin to classify their chemicals, develop enhanced safety data sheets (SDS) and label containers for downstream use in order to comply with the new standards. The first implementation deadline, completion of employee training on the 2012 HCS, is December 1, 2013.
"Chemical manufacturers bear the brunt of the changes in the 2012 HCS," said Paul Burgess, DGSA, Labelmaster's Staff Regulatory Specialist and author of the white paper. "While OSHA provided some cushioning in the implementation timeline, it remains a daunting task. This paper breaks down the larger tasks involved and offers details on the regulation as it pertains to each area with some practical guidance."
The white paper presents context, resources, regulatory guidance and practical insights for chemical companies on many of the most complex aspects of the changeover, such as new standards for appropriate labeling, use of more comprehensive safety data sheets and navigating various regulatory agency interactions, specifically with the U.S. Department of Transportation. This paper is the first of three white papers on the 2012 HCS/GHS's impact on U.S. companies. The other white papers will focus on the transportation industry and end-user workplaces where chemicals are present. These two papers will be published this summer.
