Lady Barbara Judge Highlighted in The Times of London
WASHINGTON, Aug. 16 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- As Lady Barbara Judge stepped down this year as chairman of the UK Atomic Energy Commission, The Times of London and Sunday Times headlined: "Judge kept lights on for Britain's atomic industry."
When Judge stepped into that position six years ago, she was told to shut down the state-owned atomic group; she had other ideas. Judge understood that with growing concern about climate change and the effects of fossil fuels, that nuclear power was being seen as a more viable, cleaner energy source. She also knew that Britain had the technological experience to help other countries move to atomic power. That was a part of her great success.
As she explained to The Times: "We changed the whole culture and outlook, and turned something that was going to be buried into something with a future. It was like spinning straw into gold."
Lady Judge now assumes the role of chairman of the Pension Protection Fund, which provides a safety net for some 12 million members. The Times outlined her life in "Judge is pensions protector": the "US-born lawyer who was appointed CBE in the birthday honours list yesterday, became one of the first women to sit on the Securities and Exchange Commission."
