Landscape Concepts Management Addresses the Shortage and Rising Cost of Trees
The reason is due to simple supply and demand.
GRAYSLAKE, Ill., April 20, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Trees are in high demand. During the recession nursery growers planted fewer trees and many nurseries went out of business. Prices were low, tree inventories were high, and for the last two years that cycle has been reversing itself.
When arborists closed their nurseries due to the weak economy, they had an abundance of trees that weren't sold, which meant their production decreased. Now that the economy is stronger we have a shortage of trees and an abundance of "buyers." During the recession, everyone saw a decrease in their annual profits but what the real problem was that many nurseries were forced to close their doors. Now, all the nurseries that went out of business have left behind a market with fewer propagators to supply landscaping companies. While the economy has improved, nursery growers report that sales and pricing have been increasing rapidly and our experts say it will continue to increase.
It takes time and money to care and grow the trees. Trees can take anywhere from 5-10 years to propagate. Our experts expect another 4-5 years before the industry is back to a buildup of field stock. For now growers will have to deal with the upfront cost of trees which is expensive and the turnaround time is not a quick one. Landscape Concepts Management, Inc. has its own tree nursery in Bristol, WI. We purchase our tree liners from Oregon and grow our own inventory of trees. Paul Bruggen of Landscape Concepts Management states, "The benefits of growing our own trees is that we're able to grow the types of plants that are high in demand, we're able to control the quality of the tree, and we're also able to control the logistics of growing, harvesting, and delivering them to job sites. Having our own tree nursery also allows us to keep track of our available inventory so that we're able to tell our clients what it is we have available for their projects."
