Las Vegas Educators Selected to Speak at National Education Conference on Success Strategies
LAS VEGAS, Aug. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Principal Maria Chairez and teacher Brenda Reeh were selected to present sessions at the 22nd Annual National Dropout Prevention Conference - "From Rhetoric to Action: Ready, Set, Graduate," to be held Nov. 14-17, 2010, in Philadelphia. Dr. Chairez will speak on "Quannah McCall, a Communities In Schools Empowerment school: Model for Change" and Reeh will discuss site-based strategies to help Second Language Learners.
The conference is being offered by the National Dropout Prevention Center/Network (NDPC/N) which began in 1986 to serve as a clearinghouse on issues related to dropout prevention and to offer strategies designed to increase the graduation rate in America's schools. The conference is designed to share and learn about current techniques embodied in the dropout prevention effort.
Under the guidance of Principal Chairez, the school increased their scores in reading by 6.9% and math by 12.1% as well as science by 1% and writing by 2.2%. Based on the growth among students in the non-proficient category, the school met Annual Yearly Progress. This trend shows that current efforts in school reform as well as support from community partners such as Communities In Schools are having a positive impact on student achievement.
"Thanks to the support our students and families have received from Communities In Schools of Southern Nevada, we have met AYP this year," noted Chairez. "I have strived to share with the public, our partners and our parents our successes and challenges in meeting the needs of children attending Quannah McCall CIS Empowerment ES, and I am looking forward to sharing it with the conference attendees this Fall," she added.
